Phlebotomy and EKG Technicians are valuable members of the healthcare system. Phlebotomy and EKG Technicians perform vital procedures on patients such as blood draws (Phlebotomy) and Electrocardiograms (EKG). These procedures provide test results that allow healthcare providers to diagnose patients with a range of health-related disorders. The health disorders can include deadly heart injuries and heart attacks, infectious diseases, toxicology, and nutrition analysis to name a few.

What is it like to be a Phlebotomy and EKG Technician?

Phlebotomy and EKG technicians often work in a hospital setting. Their day will consist of communicating with doctors and nurses about the tests for patients, performing tests on patients, and transporting specimens to the lab for testing. Shifts can vary from 4, 8, and 12 hours. The schedules vary as well. For example, since many hospital facilities are 24 hours they offer morning, evening and over-night positions. Overnight positions, due to the demanding hours, often come with a pay differential, meaning you get paid more per hour for this shift!

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Phlebotomy Technicians on average earn about $34,000 annually. The salary ranges from around $25,000 to nearly $50,000 a year which is not bad at all for a 5 - 6-week program. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reports that States such as New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut Phlebotomy Technicians earn above the national average.
